Mechanical Training Specialist | Clipper Windpower, Inc. | Cedar Rapids, IA

SUMMARY
This position is primarily responsible for the development and delivery of mechanical technical training to a variety of customers. The ability to draw from years of technical experience and hands-on exposure to successfully educate employees and customers is required. The audience for the training consists of internal and external customers, including: technicians, supervisors, maintenance, manufacturing personnel, or management. This position will demand equal classroom and hands-on learning methodology, and the ability to educate creatively while using all resources available.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
  • Deliver and facilitate mechanical training focused on the Clipper Liberty 2.5 MW Wind Turbine Generator. This will include mechanical assembly, operation, troubleshooting, and service training.
  • Design and develop user training programs, including manuals, facilitator guides and other learning tools for use in training and development initiatives.
  • Model excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Troubleshooting mechanical and safety issues as needed.
  • Conduct refresher training.
  • Follow established company guidelines.
    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
    No direct reports; supervisory responsibility for 5-10 individuals during class.

    QUALIFICATIONS
    To perform the job successfully, the individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
  • Mechanical Engineering experience is necessary.
  • A minimum of five years previous mechanical experience, including hands-on in training or engineering capacity.
  • A minimum of two years previous training facilitation experience (or equivalent).
  • The ability to design and develop training manuals, facilitator guides, presentations, and other related training materials.
  • Strong classroom facilitation skills.
  • Understanding of adult learning concepts and the ability to apply them to a diverse group of customers.
  • Strong organizational skills; able to manage multiple tasks.
  • A positive, can-do attitude; the ability to motivate, collaborate, and empower individuals every day.
  • The physical and technical ability to work in and around wind turbines in diverse and remote weather conditions.
  • Ability to travel up to 30% of the time post-orientation for training and facilitation, as needed.
    LANGUAGE SKILLS
    A collaborative and energetic approach to facilitation is detrimental to this role:
    • The ability to empower participants and act as a mentor by use of solid communication skills and teamwork.
    • Develop and design engaging training collateral for use in the classroom.
    • Read, analyze, and interpret technical procedures, raw data, or mechanical instructions.
    • Effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, clients, customers, and class participants.

    REASONING ABILITY
    The ability to utilize Adult Learning Methodology to analyze potential training opportunities, and act on them. The ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions or manuals, and use them as a baseline for both hands-on and classroom training.

    EDUCATION
    Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from a four-year college or university and 5+ years related experience and/or training. An equivalent combination of experience Vs. education will be considered.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS
    Working in and around wind turbine projects can be a very demanding occupation. Employees must be able to perform the following.
    • Climb tower ladders up to 300' in height as required
    • Perform basic office and computer work.
    • Stand, sit & walk as needed in both office and field requirements
    • Ability to drive vehicles in field locations if needed.
    • Must be able to hear adequately in order to work safely in a construction environment

    WORK ENVIRONMENT
    This job will be conducted in office, field, and manufacturing environments.

    There will be times when travel to the field will be essential for training or development opportunities. Field work on wind projects can be challenging in respect to changing weather conditions, high winds, excessive heat, humidity, cold, snow or ice. The physical and mental endurance to deal with such diverse environments is a necessary component to this position, and should be considered when applying for this opportunity.
